21-year-old Daniel Chesmore and his boyfriend, 24-year-old Jose Guzman recently upset a security guard at the Roseville Galleria so much that they were asked to leave the property. The offense? Holding hands and kissing in public.
The unnamed guard was so offended by the public display of affection that he followed the couple and counted their smooches, 25 in all according to his vantage.
The couple, feeling like they were being unfairly singled out, recorded the confrontation with a cell phone. They got this audio of the guard:
“If you continue to kiss, you will be asked to leave the mall. Period,” the voice on the recording said. “I counted you guys kissing 25 times. I told you before, we contact any couple [...] about this.”
Fox 40 took a trip out to Roseville and documented dozens of partners holding hands and kissing at the mall, but no one they saw was asked to leave.
Galleria officials squirmed when asked on camera to defend their actions, and referred to the posted “code of conduct” as rational for the gay couple’s eviction from the mall grounds. But the rules don’t say anything about public displays of affection, gay or straight.
While this author wants to give kudos to Fox 40 for sharing this story, I can’t because of the way they pussyfoot around the issue of equality.
The video report above starts with the following disclaimer:
“This sure is a complicated story…”
…um, no it’s not. Unless you’re living in Alabama in 1954, it isn’t.
And in the original report from last night, which has since been edited out of the above clip, the news anchor ends the report by saying that other malls sometimes ask customers to leave if they wear baggy clothes. How these two thing have anything in common escapes me.
Mall management has yet to issue an apology, but don’t be surprised if one is forthcoming.
The backlash from the toss-out has been swift and furious.
From the Galleria Facebook page:
Never shopping at your mall again. You lost my business. Get your act together.
NEVER shopping at you discriminatory mall again, disgusting HOMOPHOBES!!!!!!!
I am actually embarrassed to work in this mall now. Shocking that this type of discrimination still exists.
I can’t believe Westfield’s people haven’t responded to any of this yet. LOOK AT THIS PAGE. The people are pissed and you’ve lost a lot of customers.
I won’t be shopping at your mall, ever again. You are a disgrace to the greater Sacramento community. Shame on you for promoting such hate and bigotry. Same-sex couples are entitled to every right everyone else has, period.
There are also those who support the malls choice. From the Fox 40 story:
I would of told them to leave to that is wrong in front of kids the mall did the rite thing the news cast made me sick tonite I called in at fox 40 they hang up on me
Just say no to faggotry.
A “kiss-in” style protest is being planned for this upcoming Saturday.
