I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard from people who live outside “The Grid” that one of the reasons they won’t visit Downtown is because of the difficulties they’ve experienced while trying to park their car. It’s a phenomenon I just can’t relate to, but then again, I can parallel park like nobody’s business, and I know that on most streets, parking is free after six. With that duo of talent and knowledge, I enter Downtown in my Toyota unafraid over where I’ll stable my truck as I wander down J Street. For those of you that lack my abilities and courage, just remember this phrase; “L and 17th”.
Why “L and 17th”, you ask? Because that’s the home to Downtown’s best “secret” parking garage; centrally located and cheap-as-shit. During the off-hours only, that being after 4 pm on the weekdays and all weekend long, you can park in the clean, modern, and mostly empty state-owned parking garage for the low-low rate of just $2. Not $2-an-hour, mind you. Just 2 bucks flat-rate. Not too shabby.
From the Biz Journal:
Officials believe an uninviting entrance on 17th Street is hard to find, and that the exterior design, which blends in with its surroundings, obscures the garage’s true use. To combat that, city officials partnered with the Midtown Business Association and The Handle District to erect banners, make postcards advertising the $2 rates and put flyers in parking citation envelopes.
The garage is walking distance to many Midtown hot spots, and devoid of any spaces that make you parallel park. So come on Downtown, suburbanites. They’ve made it easier and cheaper than ever to bring your money. Just don’t forget to spend it.
