Police investigate apparent murder-suicide at SMUD headquarters

The Sacramento Police Department swarmed the East Sacramento region around the SMUD headquarters on S and 65th Street Tuesday night after a man apparently shot and killed another person before using the gun on himself. According to preliminary reports, neither persons worked for SMUD, but were rather members of a group that was using conference facilities at the building.

For as-yet-unknown reasons, two men began arguing in the parking lot outside the SMUD building at around 7:15 pm Tuesday night. At some point, one of the men drew a gun and shot the other, killing him. The shooter then entered the building briefly, spoke to a few people, and then went back into the parking lot before shooting himself as police arrived on the property.

Homicide detectives are expected to remain on the scene for the next several hours.
