So, ya wanna run for mayor of Sacramento, huh?

Frustrated with your local government? Tired of feeling like nothing’s getting done in Sacramento? Do you think you could do a better job? Then why not run in the 2012 election? It’s easy! All you need is about 20 currently registered voters who live within the city of Sacramento to sign an official nomination petition and BOOM, you’re on the ballot. There is no filing fee, and if you win, you’ll be awarded a $115,000 annual salary! Don’t wait, apply today!

But seriously folks, for all the hullabaloo about the Strong Mayor plan, the proposed arena, the budget problems, and the closing of public facilities, you would think several people would be jumping at the chance to run for mayor this year. Instead, it seems that current mayor Kevin Johnson might actually run unopposed in the 2012 cycle, which just seems mind-blowing to this author. Then again, since Johnson has accumulated over half-a-million dollars for his re-election campaign, maybe it’s just that no one wants to be on the other end of that political machine.

The nomination period to run for mayor, and for the four open council districts too for that matter, begins on Monday. The city clerk’s office will provide for free all the necessary forms with an appointment and a guide on how to run for office in Sacramento is available online by clicking here. So far, the only people who are rumored to run are noted bounty hunter Leonard Padilla and Richard Jones, a retired insurance broker who admitted that even his own wife wouldn’t vote for him.

A Facebook page named “Draft Phil Serna for Mayor” popped up overnight; no word as of yet if the current county supervisor is seriously mulling a run. A recently released poll claimed that Johnson has left an bad taste in the mouths of likely Sacramento voters, with as much as 40% of the poll respondents saying that they have an unfavorable opinion if the sitting mayor. The same poll only showed that only 10% had an unfavorable opinion of Serna.
