Sacramento craftsman obtains funding for new project after studio break-in

The Bike Valet at work

A Sacramento artisan is now celebrating after reaching his Kickstarter fundraising goal, an achievement all that more meaningful coming off the recent break-in of his Downtown studio.

ranSACkedmedia first shared the story about the burglary at Steven Tiller’s Reclamation Art + Furniture studio back on January 6th, and our readers responded in kind. Over 500 people shared the story in the first week alone, and many also “liked” our follow-up article which highlighted Tiller’s newfound resolve.

Even though $6,000 in stolen tools were never returned, and the thieves have yet to be brought to justice, Tiller wasn’t about to let the momentary setback keep him from a project he already had in the pipeline. If anything, the incident pushed Tiller to launch his Bike Valet Kickstarter project early. He needed to raise $10,000 in just 30 days in order for the funding to be released, and with almost 2 full days to go, Tiller reached the mark, thanks to over 130 backers.

When I asked Tiller for his thoughts on the entire experience, he shared the following:

We are very grateful to the news, cycling, and design blog community, along with all those that supported and helped with sharing the Kicksarter; especially the people that stepped up to help at the fundraiser (you know who you are). It amazes us that so many all helped to turn a negative into a positive. I think it really shows the positive power of social media and its ability to get the right information to the people that need to see it.

More than anything I am very excited to get to work and start production. We’ll be making calls and ordering material on minute one, as soon as the project is official, Wed February 8th @ 3:08pm.

Thanks Isaac.

You went above and beyond to help somebody you didn’t know. Admirable.

Now, the real work begins! Tiller will have his hands full, fabricating all those Bike Valets and then shipping them off to his supporters.

What a great problem to have.
