The ThinkBIG group charged with diverting public resources towards a new Downtown arena for the Sacramento Kings is adding a familiar face to its PR team: Aaron McLear, former press secretary to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Those in state service are likely no stranger to McLear, as it was his job to appear in media reports while the Schwarzenegger administration implemented the furlough program in 2009.
When McLear first arrived in Sacramento back in 2006, Steve Maviglio took to his blog to criticize his record as a republican mouth-piece, and jokingly wished him “good luck” in California. Maviglio now works for the Kevin Johnson re-election campaign. (Awkward!)
ThinkBIG considers the following month to be a critical period for the arena effort, as the March 1st deadline quickly approaches without any concrete financing plan in place. McLear and two other PR heavy-hitters have been brought onboard pro-bono as a “Purple SWAT team” (their own description) to provide “strategic advice.”
